The Transitional Kindergarten program at One Fifty Parker School offers a balanced hands-on, child-centered learning experience for children needing an additional year before entering Elementary School. We continue to build on the experiences provided in the nursery years, however, the Transitional Kindergarten day is longer and more structured. In this program, children have the opportunity to develop their skills by participating in daily activities that challenge them in ways that are developmentally appropriate. Another important aspect of the Transitional Kindergarten program is learning how to be inclusive and work cooperatively and respectfully with others. Our teachers create an active and stimulating environment that provides a solid foundation for their future education.

Transitional Kindergarten Goals:

  1. Continue the development of active exploration and interaction with choice of activities, but group skills and attention span now allow for participation in more formalized groups.
  2. Provide greater extension of experiences into the community to accommodate growing interest and awareness of the world outside their own:
    • experience various cultures
    • basic geographical concepts
  3. Provide experiences to encourage combination of ideas into more complex relations:
    • complex manipulative materials involving number concepts, relations and patterns
    • development of charts
    • simple scientific experiments
  4. Offer daily opportunities for continued development of large muscle abilities, learn about outdoors environments, and express themselves vigorously.
  5. Offer opportunities to observe the usefulness of reading and writing with beginning instruction in letter names, sounds, word identification and writing names.
  6. Provide many opportunities to enhance the social skills of cooperating, helping, negotiating and talking through interpersonal problems.
  7. Facilitate the continuous development of self-control through positive guidance techniques such as modeling, encouraging expected behavior redirecting and setting clear limits.
